She knows so much
human behavior bores her blind

          eventually we are given to test our beliefs
          the truth of our simple slogans
          about peace and love and brotherhood.

That’s fine except we are human beings
and we are deeply flawed

          we walk a straight path only with aid of maps
          invisible crutches help us limp along
          I’m not handing you excuses.

I’m offering up a plea a reason if you like
to make astringent medicine palatable

          a kiss of mercy to soften the blow
          and to keep in mind when you lay down the law
          justice is a blind bitch.
